songs, field hollers, shouts and chants and has its earliest stylistic roots in
West Africa.

Folk:
Music originating among the common people
of a nation or region and spread about and passed down orally
Gospel:
Gospel is a musical genre characterised by dominant vocals (often with strong
use of harmony) referencing lyrics of a religious nature, particularly Christian.
Subgenres include contemporary gospel and urban contemporary gospel. Gospel is
the the successor to spirituals, consisting of religious songs close to the style
of late-nineteenth-century popular music.
Jazz:
Jazz is a musical
form that grew out of a cross-fertilization of folk blues, ragtime, and European
music, particularly band music. It has been called the first native art form to
develop in the United States of America. The music has gone through a series of
developments since its inception. In roughly chronological order they are Dixieland,
swing/big band, bebop, hard bop, cool jazz, free jazz, jazz fusion and smooth
jazz. Jazz is primarily an instrumental form of music.
Latin:
It includes the music of many countries and comes in many varieties usually with
a defined beat .
Techno:
Techno is a form of electronic music
that emerged in the mid-1980s
Rock:
A genre of popular music originating in the 1950s; a blend of Black rhythm-and-blues
with White country-and-western.
Opera:
a drama set to music and made up of vocal pieces with orchestral accompaniment
and orchestral overtures and interludes.
Reggae:
Reggae is a
style of music developed in Jamaica and is closely linked to the Rastafari movement,
though not universally popular among Rastafarians. It is founded upon its rhythm
style, which is characterized by regular chops on the backbeat.
Hip
Hop
It is composed of two main elements: rapping and DJing. The term rap
is sometimes used synonymously with hip hop music, though it is also used to refer
specifically to the practice of rapping, which is just one component of hip hop.
Metal Rock
An
aggressive music style with driving rhythms and highly amplified distorted guitars,
generally with grandiose lyrics and virtuosic instrumentation.
Pop:
A
popular form of music mainly aimed at teenages - with catchy lyrics and danceable
beats.
Punk Rock:
An
anti-establishment music movement that began about 1976 blending angry lyrics
with social conscience
